Mid Week Blog: "The World Is Next Door"
In 2014, the world is next door. When I was a child growing up in the 50's and 60's the world was thousands of miles away, unreachable. We couldn't even see it. At best, all we had was our imaginations. Thinking about Africa, Europe, Asia and South America was no different that looking at the stars and moon at night. They were untouchable and unattainable in any context.
Today, because of modern day technology not only can we see what happens around the world, but what happens on the other side of the planet impacts what we do here in America and even how we live.
911 proved this beyond the shadow of a doubt. The world is next door! The suicide rate for our veterans exceeds the number of soldiers we have lost in Afghanistan.
I recently talked with a gentleman who shared with me that in his neighborhood back home, he saw many murders committed. It reminded me of my days in Chicago, and in college when I was at gun-point.
These things are not in the Ten O'clock News. These events are happening to us today, in our front yards. It's not a travesty we read about across town, but our own family members.
What do we do, now that the world is next door?
From the beginning of time, knowledge is power. Educate yourselves, prepare yourselves, equip yourselves: spiritually, intellectually and physically to the best of your ability. Wisdom tells us to always be careful when traveling, and to travel smart - this may mean even going to the store down the street. What his happening in a far and distant place, can happen right in front of your eyes.
